This is an 11 page interactive reading guide on the New South period in Georgia. It is told in a story format which makes it easy to follow and understand. Throughout the reading guide students are prompted to define a vocabulary word or answer a critical thinking question. Prompts are easy to find as they are highlighted and underlined. Students record the required information on a student handout, (included).
The booklet is aligned with the Georgia Standards and includes important people such as the Bourbon Triumvirate, Tom Watson, the Feltons, Henry Grady, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B DuBois, John & Lugenia Burns Hope, and Alonzo Herndon. Topics include: the Ga. Constitution of 1877, political parties such as the Redeemers, Populist, and Progressives, Farmer's Alliance, International Cotton Exposition, Disfranchisement Laws, 1906 Atlanta Riot, Leo Frank Case, and more!
The reading guide also has colorful photos on each page! My students find these booklets interesting and comment on how they help them understand the material. The guides act as an overview to the unit. Once my students have completed them, we then can do deeper into the unit, exploring topics through activities and simulations. The handout also serves as a great review guide. I would love to have your feedback!
