This is a 19 slide, highly animated power point presentation on The New United States Government - The Federalist Era – 1789-1801. Each of the slides are editable, so you can modify those to meet your individual needs.
The U.S. Constitution was drafted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 and ratified by the states in 1788, taking effect in 1789. The winning supporters of the ratification of the Constitution were known as Federalists, and the political party later adopted this name.
The new American government was dominated by the Federalist Party, which sought to centralize power in the federal government. The Federalist Era lasted roughly from 1789 to 1801, when the Federalist Party dominated and shaped American politics. The rival Democratic-Republicans, or Anti-Federalists, as they were called, opposed the Constitution in 1788, in part because it lacked a Bill of Rights and because they believed it provided for an overly powerful central government at the expense of state sovereignty and personal liberties.
The Federalists, spearheaded by Alexander Hamilton and his programs, believed that the American economy should be focused on trade and manufacturing, with the government playing an active role in its development. In contrast, the Democratic-Republicans, formed under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, favored a decentralized government and a greater emphasis on state sovereignty.
The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, the election of Democratic-Republican Thomas Jefferson in 1800, and the death of Alexander Hamilton in 1804 led to the decline and collapse of the Federalist Era.
