This is a great activity for the first school days of January!
A short reading (perfect for beginner ESL / ENL students) informs students about some New Year's Eve traditions around the world.
After some reading-based activities, including a future and past tense refresher and map activities, students interview each other to ask about traditions in their home countries, which they write down.
Students then reflect on the year that just past, and make some resolutions for the year to come.
As the first optional extra, students can finally turn to the internet to research new year traditions in a country of their choice. They can cut out and use sentence starters to help them write, and add draw a picture. A T-Chart graphic organizer helps the students compare traditions between countries.
Next, you can add in a comic grid, where students can either write about a favorite new year's memory from their life, or create a fiction story.
If you do not like the picture of the dogs -- an alternative page is provided with fireworks instead (at the back of the packet).
Get the new year off to a great start in your classroom!
