"The Night Before Christmas" is a language comprehension and expression unit designed to complement the popular Christmas poem. The primary unit is intended for use with students in grades K-2. Skills targeted include: answering basic level comprehension questions, answering higher lever inferential questions, describing with adjectives, and story sequencing / retell.

CONTENTS:
*This unit includes the poem, “The Night Before Christmas,” by Clement Clarke Moore. Instruction may also be supplemented by presenting the picture book and/or showing “The Night Before Christmas” video (available for viewing on Discovery Education). *Picture book and video not included.

*Includes comprehension question cards for Basic WH Questions (24 cards total) and Higher Level / Inferential Questions (12 cards total)

*Includes 36 Describing Cards to help students improve their describing and defining skills. Students develop their skills in: stating attributes and critical features, using adjectives, understanding categorization, and demonstrating knowledge of object function. Three levels of support are provided to help the Therapist / Teacher scaffold the student’s response. Prompts are provided for students capable of working at an independent level, students requiring moderate support, and students requiring intensive support.

-Independent describing cards contain an open ended question.
-Moderate support cards provide the student with leading questions / prompts to help them formulate a response.
-Intensive support strategy cards include providing a forced choice question format.

*Includes a visual support to help students move towards describing independently.

*Includes 12 sequencing cards that contain picture support and a written statement about the story. Students arrange the cards in to sequential order, then use the cards as support to retell the story.

*A written narrative blank / fill-in sheet for students to retell the story in writing.
