This is a great novel to add to your reading list. It's easy to read and entertaining. It paints a very interesting picture of life in Africa today. Students are amazed to find that real people live in Africa, with problems similar to their own. It's not all starvation and famine! I love the insight it gives us into modern African culture and society. I also like the fact that this is the first in a series of novels. Many students become hooked and continue reading following the adventures of Mma Ramotse with great pleasure.
I use the crossword to check that the book has been read. This is so that I can reward students for having completed another novel on the reading list.
There is a very good (short) free Teachers' Guide for this novel on the Random House website. It offers discussion questions on plot, character, conflict, setting and society.
