Happy holidays! Are you looking for the perfect math resource to engage your students during the month of December? You’ve found it! The North Pole Project is a real-life math project where students will complete NINE different Christmas-related tasks. The tasks will keep your students engaged during those sometimes chaotic days before Christmas, while ensuring that curriculum-related topics are being continually reinforced!

You might choose to print specific tasks to use during Math centers, or you might make a booklet out of all nine tasks and let your students choose which one to do when. The choice is yours.

TASK #1: REINDEER TRAINING

The trip on Christmas Eve is the one that the reindeer train for all year long! Help the reindeer plan their training schedule for December. They’ll have to fly longer and faster every time they train!

Math Skills: increasing patterns, skip counting

TASK #2: TOY ROOM FLOOR PLAN

Santa has decided to re-organize the toy room where the elves work. Can you help him with a design?

Math Skills: area, perimeter

TASK #3: THE ELVES AND THE TOYS

The elves are the toy makers of the North Pole. Work along with the elves to figure out the toy inventory. Then read the story and answer the questions!

Math Skills: graphing and data interpretation, addition, subtraction, problem-solving

TASK #4: THE CHRISTMAS EVE MEAL

The annual Christmas Eve meal is a big deal at the North Pole! Help Mrs. Claus plan the ingredient list.

Math Skills: working with fractions

TASK #5: LETTERS TO SANTA

All of the children’s letters keep Santa very busy over the Christmas season! Use the graphs to organize and interpret the data.

Math Skills: area, perimeter, multiplication, measurement, converting measurements, money

TASK #6: THE NORTH POLE PATROL

The North Pole Patrol is a group of elves who make sure that Santa’s Workshop is always safe. Help them plan their Christmas patrol schedule.

Math Skills: elapsed time, timelines, perimeter

TASK #7: THE NORTH POLE EXPRESS

How do the elves travel around the North Pole? With the North Pole Express of course! Help the driver plan his route.

Math Skills: coordinate planes, mapping

TASK #8: THE NORTH POLE CAFETERIA

Where do all of the people at Santa’s Workshop eat lunch? At the North Pole Cafeteria of course! Help each person decide what to have for lunch.

Math Skills: money

TASK #9: THE ANNUAL MYSTERY PICTURE

Every Christmas, the elves make a special mystery picture in the snow for Santa. Then when Santa takes flight on Christmas Eve, he gets to see it from up in the air! It’s one of Santa’s favorite parts of Christmas Eve!

Math Skills: basic operations, hundred chart

MODIFICATIONS

This package also includes modified pages for some of the activities. This includes smaller numbers than the original version. Use the modified pages to ensure that each student can experience success at his own level.

Answer keys are provided for the activities where there is only one correct answer.
