This 17 page resource provides teachers of English, and the social and physical sciences with student versions and teacher resources for a prevalent modern issue addressed in the Economist December 2014 article, "The Nuclear Money Pit." The text is written at an SAT and college prep level, and provides ample examples of complex sentence structures, vocabulary and diction, grammatical usage and historical and contemporary significant events. Students are presented with 10 prompts to facilitate active reading, critical thinking and common core standard, SAT, and advanced reading and writing skill development. The teacher resources include an annotated version of the article for modeling and reference, and sample student responses in an answer key for each student prompt. This assignment can be modified to create a group project, individual assessment, or research assignment.
