This lesson teaches students what a ballet is, the overview of The Nutcracker, and a brief bio on Tchaikovsky. The lesson also includes rhythm activities, movement activities, and activities on form for the 8 pieces in the Nutcracker Suite. There are also website links to youtube of the different ballet performances of each piece. The 8 pieces included and activities are:
The Overture- Form
March- Form and movement
Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy- a slide explaining what a celesta is and a rhythm and movement activity
Russian Dance- Rhythm and movement activity
Arabian Dance- a slide where students count how many times they hear the tambourine, a slide that shows the instruments in the song, a slide where they compare and contrast the arabian dance and the russian dance
Chinese Dance- listening map where students point to the high pictures if they hear high sounds and the low pictures if they hear low sounds during the song.
Dance of the Reed Pipes- Rhythm activity
Waltz of the Flowers- form activity and students guess what instruments they are hearing during the song
