Have your students teach the books of The Odyssey to one another. After reading the beginning of The Odyssey as a class and providing students with necessary mythology background information, divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Each group will be responsible for 2 books in The Odyssey (unless you assign The Cyclops to a group, that one is long enough on its own.) Give students about 5 days in class (at least 1 day in the computer lab) to prepare. Provide an additional 2 days of class for presentations.
Groups are responsible for: (1) creating a visual aid for their books [like a movie poster, comic strip, etc.], (2) completing a short, creative writing piece that summarizes their books [like a diary entry, newspaper article, play, etc.], (3) creating a quiz or alternative assessment [like a crossword puzzle or mini game show] to ensure their classmates pay attention during their presentation, and (4) presenting and summarizing their books to the class in 5-7 minutes.
This project is easily modified.
This ZIP file contains: (1) a PowerPoint with student examples, (2) an easily modified assignment sheet, and (3) project proposal handout [in the same Word document as the assignment sheet].
