This download is for a gallery walk and corresponding image analysis writing assignment. My students typically struggle with the language of "The Odyssey", so, I've found the more pictures and images I can provide them...the better! However, they've typically not had much experience with image analysis by the time they reach me in 9th grade; and that's where this activity comes into play!
I use one class period and have students look at 20 images of the 5 key antagonists in the text (Polyphemus the Cyclops, Scylla, Charybdis, The Lotus Eaters, and The Sirens). I print these images as 8x10, full color pictures that are mounted on color to identify the five "galleries" (one per monster). Each of the five are then grouped together and displayed for analysis and comparison as a "station" in my room.
THIS DOWNLOAD DOES NOT INCLUDE THE IMAGES. I use a variety of differing images from basic Google searches and am unable to include them because I do not own the art. This download has everything you need...just add up to 4 images of your choice for each. (If purchased, I can provide recommendations for pictures that work well- just reach out and I'd be happy to assist further!)
The download also includes the picture analysis assignment I use with my students. After they've examined all 20 images, I allow them to choose which one they'd like to compare and contrast to the text in extended responses. I do have 20 separate handouts featuring the 20 different images included in this purchase. I print at least 25 of each and allow students to decide which they believe they have the most to write about. The documents in this download allow for you to simply plug in your picture options and give students as much, or as little, choice, as you'd prefer!
Of course, I'll typically have students absent on the day of the gallery walk. To solve this problem I've also included my own handout of the assignment in individual format within this purchase. Again, you simply plug in the pictures you've chosen to use and the absent work is ready to go!
PLEASE NOTE: . All documents within the purchase are "just add your image" formatted so you will need to find and add the 20 pictures of your choice. (You may also add other antagonists such as Circe if you wish to make the assignment span more than one class period. For reference, I have 45 minute class periods and 20 pictures seems to be the magic number for me, personally!)
