Students had a summer reading assignment to complete asking them to annotate a book for characterization and character growth. As a summative assessment after our first unit reading The Odyssey, students used what they learned about the hero's journey and applied it to their summer reading books. The assignment can be used with a different text as long as it represents all of the major steps of the hero's journey. The class pre-selected five of the most important steps of the journey in terms of character development, and those are the steps they use to complete this assignment. That's the best way to make this assignment manageable for freshmen, but could be modified to be more difficult for older students. I have included a checklist for students to use as they prepare the assignment so they can check off each step as they go to make sure they complete it appropriately and thoroughly. Common Core standards are included as well as the assignment overview and specific scaffolded instructions. The assessment has an MYP rubric attached to it since we are an International Baccalaureate school.
