b. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., precede, recede, secede).
The activities in this lesson include:
1. a comprehensive list of Greek and Latin roots, their meanings, and words included in each root family.
2. a graphic organizer to assist students in identifying a root and its meaning as well as identifying other vocabulary words in that particular root family; the graphic organizer also requires students to define each vocabulary word.
3. a template for an ABC BOOK OF WORD ETYMOLOGIES along with a sample page.
4. a student assessment with answer key
This lesson can be used over the course of a few days or as a weekly part of vocabulary development.
The ABC book of word etymologies is intended to be used as an enrichment activity or as part of the etymology lesson.
The lesson includes some useful websites for further research and student use.
