The Omnivore's Dilemma: Young Readers Edition is an amazing resource for teaching students the research process. It's interesting, relevant to their lives, and is an awesome platform for inquiry based learning.
When given the autonomy to research an aspect of the food industry that they want to change, students dive deeply into the research--more so than they ever did on tasks I had explicitly assigned.
The power of this research project is in student choice so, in addition to being able to select their topic, there are two different essay formats students can complete: one standard argumentative essay and one advanced, traditionally formatted research paper.
Included in this resource is the writing checklist and rubric (a one pager of student expectations) and essay outlines for each essay format with and without sentence starters. With this scaffolding, you can finally assign a common performance task that is easily scaffolded to every student in your classroom.
