An art project that goes along with the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.
The section titled “Finally” (pages 214-220) is the culmination of all of Ivan’s hard work in creating a message to try and save Ruby. His message was “HOME” combining hundreds of sheets of plain paper to make the word billboard size.
In this task students must work in groups of eight to recreate the book cover. The catch is that they have to do it in sections, like Ivan did with his picture/message. The handout includes a gridded picture of the book cover and basic instructions. Students each pick one of eight sections of the grid to draw/paint/color themselves. The trick is that there is no scale or detailed instructions. So when the students come together to combine their sections and make a larger picture the colors or lines might not match up. The picture might be skewed like Ivan's was.
Depending on class size you could also have a contest of "which turned out the best?" between different groups.
