My students love this short story and lesson. It is an excellent tool for teaching irony and surprise endings, and it demonstrates very well that our protagonist doesn’t always have to be heroic or even likable. It also gets students to really see the differences between “romance” as it is portrayed in this story, as opposed to what we consider “romance” in today’s society. My students also love watching the accompanying video after we read the story. I hope your students will enjoy this lesson as well.
This lesson includes:
• A PDF of the story
• 15 questions that can be used as study/discussion questions or as a quiz and a key
• And a link to a 12-minute video entitled “The Open Door” that very closely follows the story
