Sing this song to the old Gilligan's Island theme ("Now sit right back and you'll hear a tale..."). This song is a fun way to teach the following standards:
Why did settlers travel west on the Oregon Trail?
What hardships did the settlers face on the trail?
What was the Homestead Act?
How did towns grow along the trail?
Brain research tells us that songs are stored in long term memory-use the songs as a scaffold to allow students to access the important information you teach them, for the long term! Don't be surprised if they hum during the "Big Test"! I also use the songs as a non-traditional assessment- think "differentiation!"
