Once upon a time, man lived in nomadic bands. The next day, he woke up and built a city... Umm... negative! This seems to be the way that students view the development of civilizations: as an overnight process. This activity is geared toward expanding student understanding of how civilizations developed starting with the invention of farming. It focuses on a fourteen step process that takes students from Paleolithic hunter-gatherers to complex civilizations in the Neolithic period. Several vocabulary terms like irrigation, trade, and domestication are addressed as well. There are three different activities involved in this packet. All three work as standalone assignments or can be done in conjunction with one another to reinforce the process. Check out the preview for more details!
