The Outsiders is a novel read in middle schools across the nation. It's valuable life lessons are relatable and kids connect well with the characters. The relay challenge activity is a great way to "end" your lessons for this classic book. If you like "hands on" activities that engage your students then this is definitely for you. To see the kids having fun while they are learning is priceless. This activity will have your students reflecting back on the emotions of what the characters may have felt because they get to experience some of those emotions in this fun, high energy challenge. Students are placed on two teams (Socs) and (Greasers). They then compete with varying rules to which the Socs get a slight advantage over the Greasers. Students will complete multiple races then write about how they felt based on which team they were on and some life lessons learned through the activity. Note: This will need to be done outside or in a gym.
