THE OUTSIDERS CHARACTERIZATION ACTIVITY

This is a deeply engaging activity for your students to not only learn how to analyze/characterize literature, but learn how to reflect and grow as individuals through reading.

What is included:

1) Powerpoint Presentation with definition and examples of Dynamic, Static, Round, and Flat Characters; Characterization (Indirect and Direct)

2) Student Guided Notes: Two options to correspond with the PowerPoint (fill-in notes or ready-to-use)

3) Character Brainstorming Sheets: Students will be given an acronym (T.R.A.I.T.S.) to help them remember what to consider when analyzing characters. Upon filling out the brainstorming work, there is an option for a paragraph or essay portion of Characterization (for one or all of the characters included).

4) Self-Reflection: I think one of the most important aspects of character analysis in literature is the opportunity for Self-Reflection. In characters, we often can see similar or very dissimilar traits within ourselves. This portion of the packet allows students to complete the same process of characterizing they did with the characters, but for themselves. With this, hopefully they are able to be given some insight as to why reading is so important.
