Do you want to hear your students beg to read? Activate background knowledge and generate interest for S.E. Hinton’s young-adult novel, “The Outsiders”, before students read the book. This activity uses Philosophical Chairs to structure a small group and then a whole group discussion on several of the major themes and conflicts in the novel. Students will make predictions and loud requests to start reading the book immediately.
The main questions in this activity can be easily substituted with other questions for different novels.
Included are a multipart instruction to run a Philosophical Chair for a small group and whole class discussion.
