So, here I am... we just finished reading The Outsiders, the kids loved the book, and now it's time to show them the movie.
I don't want them passively watching a movie for 90 minutes.
I don't want them answering six thousand questions as the movie plays and then copying the answers they missed from one another.
This two-page document addresses a balance of the above scenarios. The first page is to be completed before the students begin watching. What are parts of this book that you enjoyed and hope you get to see in the movie? If you were the director, what parts of the book would you find challenging to adapt into film? What part of this book do you hope is not in the movie?
The second page can be completed as the movie plays. It is a Venn Diagram and chart that asks students to compare specific events in the movie to those in the book.
It works well and can be adapted for any novel/movie pairing in your curriculum.
