This product is a reader’s theater that corresponds with Chapter 11 of “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. It can be used as an introduction to the chapter, as a practice for close reading strategies, or as a review. There are teacher instructions included to help run the lesson.
This includes a script 6 pages in length where students will assume the role of characters from the novel and perform the chapter in a dramatic fashion. The dialogue in the script is taken exactly from the novel. This Reader's Theater is set up like a talk show. There are two hosts and numerous characters from the book and author S.E. Hinton takes the stage as well. There is an activity for audience participation. The students run this lesson. The reader’s theater is active learning with dramatic flare. It is very appealing to reluctant and struggling readers. There is an exit activity attached to the reader’s theater for a summative assessment. There are also 8 task cards to monitor student learning.
I conduct these types of reader’s theater frequently in my seventh grade classroom. The students are always engaged and excited about the day. When the students come into my classroom and see it is set up for a reader’s theater, they often come in requesting roles and ready to learn.
