This 3-part activity encourages students to identify positive character traits for the Greasers and Socs from the novel, The Outsiders, and to relate them to an influential person in their own lives.
This activity requires students to (1) create a list of positive personality traits for their chosen character; (2) complete a Venn Diagram comparing their character to a person in their own life (Venn Diagram included); and (3) choose 2 of the common traits and further explain how the character/living person exemplify those traits in 2 well-developed paragraphs.
I gave my students 2 different ways to set up their paragraphs. The first option was to focus on the character and their 2 personality traits in the first paragraph and then the second paragraph would be about the person in their life's traits. The other option was to focus on one trait in the first paragraph and discuss how both the character and the person in their life display that characteristic, and then do the same in the second paragraph for the other trait. These are just suggestions and can be adjusted to your specific ideas.
