This organizer has been designed to use during or after reading the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. When required to write an essay, students with learning needs often require additional assistance with planning and writing their first draft. This organizer helps English Language Arts teachers differentiate instruction for students who require additional support when writing an essay. It provides students with guided prompts to help them write a five paragraph character sketch essay of one of the characters in the novel. Students may choose to write about the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, or another member of the Greasers. Paragraphs focus on the character's age and family background, physical appearance, actions and feelings, and what others think about him/her. The final paragraph allows students to express their personal thoughts and feelings towards the character. After completing this first draft, students can then type their essay and format it according to teacher specifications. As a prewriting activity prior to using this organizer, students can use a graphic organizer to collect all of the information about their chosen character. If your students require a little more guidance for writing their introductory and closing paragraph, try my Character Sketch Essay Organizer
which can be used with any novel.
