This is an "intro to dialectical journals" that I created for my 7th grade students while reading "The Outsiders." The journal consists of a selection of quotes from each of the 12 chapters, with a half-page of writing space for each chapter. Each chapter also has a selection of vocabulary (4-6 words per chapter) activities.
The document is a powerpoint, so it can be edited. For my students, they needed to be given the quotes as this is the first dialectical journal they have ever done. More advanced students can begin selecting their own quotes and passages. The first 2 pages provide an introduction to dialectical journals and sample responses, as well as sentence starters.
To create the booklet, you will want to first print the document. Copiers may vary, but here is the process I follow with my own copier:
1. Alternate every other page, so page 1 is right-side-up, page 2 is upside down, page 3 is right-side up, etc.
2. photo copy so it is double sided
3. Fold the booklet in half - check that the page numbers run in order
4. The book is a little thick, but can be stapled.
