This is a Mock Trial that puts Johnny on trial for the murder of Bob. Each student is given a role to play in “court”. (Or they can choose roles and the names can be drawn at random). Each student will be given one of the role sheets to fill out/do research. This gives the students close examination of characterization.
There are "role play" two versions included in this packet—an advanced version and a grade-level version. The advanced version requires the students to write three full paragraphs for his or her role in the trial. The grade-level version requires two paragraphs. Each sheet has the requirement/prompt listed for each of the paragraphs. The students should use the book as a reference for their paragraphs, but encourage them to add their own angle to each role. (E.G. Maybe Ponyboy lies on the stand and says they never jumped a train!!)
The Mock Trial can be done upon reading Chapter Four or after any of the following chapters (or if preferred, upon completion of the novel). There may only be one student for Johnny, Ponyboy, A Sheriff, and The Judge. The majority of the class will be given a defense team sheet, a prosecution team sheet, or a jury member sheet. Once each student has prepared, the "defense" and the "prosecution" will be given time to review everyone's paragraphs and choose information that they will use during the trial. One student from each team can be chosen to read. The Judge is given the role of monitoring (calling to stand, etc.). The "witnesses" will all be given time on the stand and each team can "cross-examine" with questions if time permits. Upon witness interrogation, the jury will deliberate in the hall and come to a verdict.
The roles are as follows:
Randy (Bob's Friend)
A Defense Team Lawyer
A Prosecution Team Lawyer
A Jury Member
