The activity presents a series of statements that relate in some way to the themes or conflicts in S. E. Hinton's 'The Outsiders'. Before starting the book, students read each statement and determine their agreement or disagreement on the line below by marking an "x". They are also instructed to record their reasoning below each statement in 1-2 sentences or bullet points. This portion of the activity can be given in class or as a homework assignment. One successful way to share the results of this activity is to create a physical likert scale in your classroom. Have a few students come up per statement and place themselves on the line in the spot where they marked the "x" on their paper. Students then discuss their choices with one another, leading to a fruitful class discussion. *These statements can lead to future writing prompts or essay prompts during the reading of 'The Outsiders'.
