PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This common-core aligned activity for The Outsiders uses excerpts of text from ch.1-3 to engage students in a close reading to analyze character traits using dialogue.

Students will use annotation as they read through short excerpts of text. They will complete an active-reading graphic organizer and unpack their thinking by explaining their reasoning in writing.

They will then use critical thinking skills to create categories for their character traits and make comparisons to better understand the relationship between traits.

Finally, students will be presented with a writing prompt. They will use their active reading graphic organizer to construct a thesis statement and list textual evidence.

This can be used as a pre-writing or just as a general exercise to practice developing critical thinking skills, inference, and developing a thesis using textual evidence.
