This pack includes several activities and assignments to use before, during, and after reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Vocabulary Packets - There are three separate packets in which students are responsible and held accountable for finding unknown vocabulary words. Packets are grouped in chapter sets (1-4, 5-8, 9-12). They include pages for students to list unknown words, parts of speech, and definitions (1 page/4 word spaces per chapter) as well as a section for students to write original sentences using the words they find. At the end of each packet are worksheets for students to create crossword puzzles for their found words.
Scavenger Hunt - The scavenger hunt includes a worksheets to be printed up and "scattered" around the room by the teacher, and a scavenger hunt worksheet. The scavenger hunt worksheet asks students to find and read about various important events that happened during the 1960s, and then answer questions on those events.
Trial Activity - This activity should be used after reading chapter 4. Each student will take on a different role/character and the class will put on a trial to determine whether Johnny should be found guilty or not guilty of manslaughter. Students are asked to "research" their character and events by rereading sections of the novel and taking notes. After the trial is over, students will become jurors to determine Johnny's guilt or innocence. Finally, there is a reflection essay that students can respond to/write after the activity is over.
Chapter Questions - This offers questions for each chapter.
Character Chart - This worksheet gives students a place to identify and describe characters. The sheet also asks students to consider the motif of eye description/color and what they suggest about the characters.
Newspaper Project - This culminating project asks students to write an article, an editorial, and an obituary based on events in the novel. Students are also asked to create an advertisement that could be found in a 1960s newspaper. The project packet gives details for each section of the project and offers graphic organizers and planning sheets.
Assessment - This assessment asks students to match characters to their descriptions, answer multiple choice questions, answer short answer questions, and write a 3-paragraph essay.
