Maybe you, too, read The Outsiders. This is a pdf that will rock your introduction to the novel. Besides using paper, we use iPads and with some assignments, students take notes on a pdf in Notability. Students will need some background using the STEAL acronym for Indirect Characterization. (S = Speech, T = Thoughts and feelings, E = Effects on others, A = Actions, and L = Looks and appearances.) The paid-for version has a richly completed answer key included -- each of these slides has answers and examples of direct and indirect characterization and full explanations.
In groups of, say, three or four, or on their own, students research characters and then present to the class. Students enjoy presenting what they are inferring and learning about these vivid and memorable characters. The other students take notes. Afterwards, you can use the answer key to show an elaborated review or cover additional points. The sketches of these Outsider characters are from the net, found years ago, and I can't locate the artist; the layout and answer key is my own arrangement.
