Help students to gain a deeper understanding of teen culture in the 1960's by examining trends and themes in music from the time period.
This packet contains two activities:
1) Genre and Artists of the 1960's
In this activity, students will learn more about the music of The Outsiders, and specifically the 1960’s. Students will choose an artist or group from a particular sub-genre, research the sub-genre and its history, as well as a group from that particular sub-genre.
Then, each group will choose one song from the artist in their sub-genre. They will examine the lyrics of that song for figurative language, meaning, and theme. Using these elements, they will determine what message the group was trying to send to the world, and whether or not this message is still relevant today, especially with teenagers.
2) Teen Music and Culture Lyric Analysis
Students will analyze the lyrics of a song and examine them for elements of teen culture using the 8 elements of culture as a reference. They will then answer questions on the message the artist is trying send regarding teen culture, and look for trends across the decades.
Great activity to practice close reading skills, figurative language analysis, research skills, and introduce students to The Outsiders.
