This is an entire 65 page packet teachers can copy for their students when studying SE Hinton's book The Outsiders. I assign each student a character and a theme to track throughout the book. For advanced level students, they also have to track a literary element. Included is a 5-6 week calendar.
This packet includes extension activities for advanced classes. You will find pre-reading activities such as literary term definitions, anticipation guides, connotation versus denotation assignment, chapter vocabulary, and journal topics.
During reading, students keep track of slang "Greaser" terms, answer chapter questions, describe each characters physical and personality traits, complete a Venn diagram comparing Greasers and Socs and then write a paragraph using that information, write a poem about their character, annotate the Robert Frost poem in the book, and keep track of figurative language, allusions, foreshadowing, and symbolism examples. Also, there is a dialectical journal available.
There is a group poster project regarding character traits and a sample for student reference.
For the end of the unit, included are 2 versions of the same test and 4 essay prompts for the students to analyze and prepare for. Also, there is a rubric for the essay.
Extension activities for advanced include annotating poem Richard Cory and writing paragraph or essay on how the themes are similar in both texts. Students annotate an additional piece in their books. Close Reading chart and dialectical journal charts are similar to the regular English ones but have less guidance. Finally, two additional essay prompts are included.
