This 38-slide PowerPoint is highly visual - full of photos, political cartoons, and other visuals. It traces the history of the canal back to the France's early attmepts to build and their abandoning the canal effort. It also outlines the three main challenges to our building the canal: Columbia's claim on Panama and disinterest in our building (which resulted in our supporting a Panamanian coup), rugged terrian (which the French tried to cut through, and which led us to use a system of locks), and disease (malaria & yellow fever, which shortly before our attempt were discovered to be spread by mosquitoes). This is a great overview of meeting and overcoming multiple challenges of politics, geography, and medicine.
