This is the 10th passage in a series of passages that pick up in history where my second notebook ended.
This passage is about the Panama Canal and covers topics such as: an Isthmus, Canal, need for the Canal, benefits, why the French stopped building, How the Americans took over, Panama becoming independent from Columbia, Treaty between Panama and the US, Panama taking over the Canal, how it remains an international waterway

Please note..... when I write my passages, I try to sum up the major events surrounding the topic of the passage. There may be other details you would like to include that I did not include, so you can pull other resources for that. My goal is to write an article about the topic that is not as overwhelming as the often wordy textbooks. Textbooks can sometimes provide so much information that fourth and fifth graders can not even figure out what the important event is.
This passage was written with 4th-5th graders in mind. The majority of the passages in this third series follow the social studies curriculum for the state of Georgia for 5th graders. Keep in mind though that they are non-fiction, so even older kids or kids from all states could benefit from the historical material.
The push today in the elementary classroom is to teach the kids the skills of close reading. Focus on and analyze a shorter passage. Hold the details of the passage under a microscope to really examine it.
Teach a reading lesson while also introducing a social studies topic... it makes covering the social studies content so much easier.
I did not use any clipart on this because I wanted the focus to be on the words and not images.
There are no written student questions, but suggested teacher discussion questions are included.
