John Steinbeck’s novella The Pearl is a wonderfully versatile literary work for the classroom. The activities in this 12-page package may be used individually or as a unit. The Pearl can be taught in middle school and in high school. I have taught it to Honors and AP classes as an introduction to a Steinbeck unit, alongside Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.
• The Introductory Activity is fun for any age and is an excellent cross-curricular (music) resource. Includes a reproducible form
• The Dialectical Journal is an easily modified close-reading assignment for different age groups and class levels. Includes reproducible templates for journaling handouts, a sample journaling entry, and a grading rubric
• The Symbolism and Motif trackers are valuable close reading tools for focusing on those specific literary elements. Includes reproducible tracker templates
• The Project-Based Learning group PowerPoint assignment incorporates technology as it appeals to a variety of learning styles as it gives students an opportunity to exercise their preferences among art, music, poetry, or photography.
