I have used this essay test over The Pearl as an end of unit assessment for going on four years now. My students choose two of the seven topics to write a one paragraph, literary analysis essay over (these guidelines can be adapted at the teacher's discretion: one topic can be made into a multi-paragraph essay, for example).
The rubric is presented in a checklist format. Each item (which represents a standard which I have taught), receives a check (full credit) check minus (partial credit), or an X (no credit).
Here is how I grade with this rubric: between the two paragraphs, there are 18 blanks. Plug that number into your EZ Grader (I use an app for that!). Two check minus marks = minus one. One X = minus one. Therefore, if the student receives two check minuses and one X, then they receive minus 2. Out of 18 blanks, that earns a grade of an 89. This method works for me because it is purely mathematical and produces an accurate grade based on the student's mastery of the standards.
