This one page graphic organizer is a great tool to use after reading the novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck. It is simple enough that students can still enjoy the movie but rigorous enough that they still have to use critical thinking.
Students find differences between the book and the movie and record them in and then they explain the change based in various questions. This really made students think about why writers do certain things and why movie producers do other things.
Most of my students usually do not think the movie is all that great so I often follow up by having students write a letter to the producers explaining what they could have done better or differently, using their charts as necessary.
