FREEBIE!! This is a great group activity in which students choose a theme from the novella, choose three symbols, and have to tie them all together on a poster to display in the classroom. They will divide the poster up into four sections (I suggest one across the top where the theme can go), and three on the bottom for the symbols, but they can do it any way they want. The idea is that each symbol connects to the chosen theme in some way.
They can draw, color, and be creative. Great activity for the middle chapters of the book (3-5), right before starting their essay. The theme and symbols come in handy when they write about it!
Should take a whole class period, or longer, depending on if you have blocks or not.
