This activity allows students to tackle the literary elements of theme, symbol, motif, and allusion in Steinbeck's The Pearl. A brief discussion of each of these terms is given for the student, and then examples of these elements from the novel are listed for the students. For each example listed, students are asked to give textual information to show how each element is used in the novel. This activity should be completed after students have read the entire book, and it is a good culminating activity that would best be completed by small groups or the whole class.
