The Peloponnesian War Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 33 questions based on an online tutorial video and the History.com website.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the video: Peloponnesian War and Thucydides. Students will be introduced to the historian Thucydides and his first hand account of the war. The initial Athenian and Spartan alliance against Persia is first explored, followed by the two city-states founding their own empires, the Delian League (Athens) and the Peloponnesian League (Sparta). The falling out of these two city-states then leads to the 30 year conflict of the Peloponnesian War. The building of Athens great walls are reviewed, as is the leadership of the general Pericles. The plague which killed Pericles, and likely doomed Athens, is then covered. The poor leadership that takes command in Athens is described as the likely cause of Athens failure. The video goes on to describe several of the battles of the war and how Athens was eventually worn down and defeated. The video ends by stating that both Athens and Sparta were so weakened by the war that neither would ever regain their true glory. Following the video, students will read an article on the history.com website. The article will discuss the power of the Spartan army and the Athenian navy, the failed Athenian invasions of Sicily, and the alliance which eventually defeated Athens.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
