Product Description

This PowerPoint slideshow gives students a chance to learn about the U.S. Penny. We investigate the words, numbers and images that appear on the front (obverse) and back (reverse) of our one cent coin. We take a pictorial journey to learn about “E pluribus unum,” and “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.” We find the initials of the designers and sculptors hidden on each coin and learn who they are. We look for trees and bushes, windows and doors, handkerchiefs and suspenders, jackets and bow ties. We notice the stripes and wonder why there are thirteen of them on the shield. This automated and animated PowerPoint will engage your students in wondering, hypothesizing, and finding answers to these curiosities as we explore the penny’s rendering of:

Lincoln’s birth and early childhood in Kentucky

Lincoln’s formative years in Indiana

Lincoln’s professional life in Illinois

Lincoln’s presidency in D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial

The Union Shield

Take a look at the Preview to see an abbreviated version of this slideshow.

And if your class is raising money for Pennies for Patients, then this PowerPoint will get your students excited about finding lots of pennies.
