Students often confuse tone with content. They think "It's about death--the tone is sad!" But they are wrong. This lesson is a slammed full class period of analysis. First it offers students a methodical way to analyze literary elements to reveal tone. It includes a list of tone words. Then there are three texts about death--all with very different tones--for them to analyze. Included are clean copies of all three texts AND THE BEST PART--annotated copies--so you can see how to teach it. There is a follow up handout for the next day in which they analyze two additional poems for tone as well. Students will completely get the concept of tone--in just 1-2 days!
