Product Description

Introduce The Perks of Being a Wallflower in a way that will grab your students' attention with this engaging intro activity to the novel!

In this activity, before announcing that you will be reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, you will gather 5-6 items from your classroom, house, or Dollar Tree that relate to the novel! (I have a long list of ideas in this product). Once you have these items, you will put these items in a bag or container that you have.

To begin class, put your students in groups of 3-4 and tell students that THEY will be making their own inferences about the novel you will be reading together and what the novel might be about based on the clues you give them.

With the clues you give them, students will work in groups to write their own story based on the items in the bag. They will also name their story. If they have trouble getting started, I have provided an example story to help. All stories should include EVERY item in the bag and should flow like a story. These stories should be at least one page.

When every group understands the task and has a “A Look at Our Book” sheet, you will open the bag and reveal each item by holding them up and placing them on a surface in front of you that is visible to all students. Once you have shown every item, tell students to use each one to create their one-page storyline with their groups that connects these items. These stories might end up sounding silly, but that’s okay, the items just must all connect.

Once you have given students about 10-15 minutes to write their storylines using each item, each group will share with the class. After sharing, pass out the books and begin reading! As you read the novel, students will be more inclined to remember important symbols in the story as they were used as items to describe the novel in this intro activity. It's also fun for students to compare their own ideas of what the story was like based on the items you showed them based on the real events of The Perks of Being a Wallflower as they read.

This activity is an engaging way to begin the novel and also challenges students to use creative writing techniques. I hope you enjoy!
