This powerpoint lesson on the persuasive essay teaches students how to organize arguments according to the Greek trio of logos, ethos and pathos. It introduces students to a series of argumentative strategies and asks them to consider which strategies are most effective for a given topic. It also outlines a sample of faulty strategies and addresses the basis of their ineffectiveness. I have used this powerpoint with my intermediate (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12) students. They love its clarity and robustness. See also my companion piece: The Essay Organizer.
