This lesson, which can be used as a part of a study of the early American colonies or a Thanksgiving enrichment, helps students to explore the motives behind the Pilgrims' journey to the New World. It will help students to learn how to take notes through the use of an advance organizer. Then students can evaluate what they have learned and create a letter from the Pilgrim's point of view.

This lesson includes: lesson plan, PowerPoint presentation, notes, creative writing sheet, and writing rubric

Duration: 1 class

Names and Vocabulary: Puritan, Separatist, Dissenter, persecute, Pilgrim, Mayflower, Mayflower Compact, Squanto, Samoset, Thanksgiving

Skills: note-taking, creating and interpreting a Venn diagram, creative writing, empathizing with historical figures

Objectives:
a. Given a lecture, notes and First Thanksgiving activity, the student will be able to accurately explain the significance of the following terms: Puritan, Separatist, persecute, Pilgrim, Mayflower Compact, Squanto, Thanksgiving.
b. Given a lecture, notes, and First Thanksgiving activity, the student will be able to write a short speech to teacher satisfaction* describing something a Pilgrim would be thankful for. (* see rubric)
