Product Description
Teach your students about listening to and investigating the viewpoints of others through this set of activities that focus on whether or not pipelines should be built in Canada.

This product starts with a few lessons on multiple points of view and then gets into more specific details about pipelines by quoting both real and imaginary figures who have been involved with the debate. This project does not focus on specific pipeline or project in the news, but uses the viewpoints of many well-known public figures and their quotes from the media. Students will analyze the quotes looking for facts and opinions as well as which stance they take before making a decision, researching the point of view further and then writing a persuasive piece to outline their side of the issue. Graphic organizers are included to help your students organize their ideas during the planning process.

This task aligns with the Alberta Program of Studies for Grade 5 as one of the general outcomes for all Social Studies programs-multiple perspectives and current events. It is broad enough to be used to support any lesson about natural resources or topics in the news. If you have strong students, it can be used with Grade 4, but we recommend this product for grade 5 and up. This product focuses on Canadian issues, media and personalities.

It has been classroom tested with students in Grades four and five with success, though Grade Four students required extra supports.
