Engage your students in learning more about the Populist Movement through a close reading of two famous speeches. Utilizing carefully excerpted speeches from William Jennings Bryan and Mary Elizabeth Lease, students break down the key components of the speeches with a well-structured scaffold to help them understand both the content of the speech as well as the rhetorical strategies found within each speech. Assess your students' understanding of the speeches and the Populists with a provided exit ticket that asks students to demonstrate their knowledge of issues confronting the Populists as well as solutions they proposed.
Great lesson to use when seeking to incorporate Common Core standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. Product includes both excerpted speeches (2 pages each), accompanying scaffolds, and an exit ticket.
