Product Description

My husband’s district went one-to-one with Chromebooks this year, so he asked me to create one of my book projects for his sophomore English class. This HyperDoc is designed to be used as a companion activity while reading The Power of One, a highly engaging book that explores South African life in the first half of the 20th century.

Don't let the reading level (940 Lexile level) fool you; this novel explores some complex themes with some advanced subject matter. In the past, many allusions were lost on my husband's students because they didn’t understand the history. As often happens with any novel, more subtle nuances in the book were passed over and the deeper meaning frequently overlooked. To that end, I have included more than 50 links to articles, videos, audio recordings and activities to help deepen comprehension and spark critical thinking.

Integration is the name of the game, so I’ve taken care to include a variety of subject areas and diverse media. You can't read this book without an in-depth discussion about character, courage and morality, so many questions and activities address this.

At the end of the project, extension activities have been included for in-depth essay assignments (students can choose one) and “extra” image links are included throughout for early finishers to explore or for curious students who just want to know more. This project can be used with your whole class if you have one-to-one devices, small groups at a computer center, or individually. You can assign all of it or just certain parts. This is ideal for students who read at different rates and makes it easy for students to keep up or make up when absent.
