Product Description
Are you tired of teaching and practicing the standards through comprehension worksheets or the textbook? Do you want to have more common texts in your classroom that you and your students can reference throughout the year? Do you want to introduce your students to new places, diverse people, and social situations while still teaching the standards? Do you want to enhance their vocabulary and promote inquiry and discussion through meaningful text?

The Power of Picture Books does all that and more while incorporating good literature into your curriculum. These mentor texts, lessons, activities, and discussions are a great way to introduce, develop, and review the standards in an engaging and confidence-building manner. The exit tickets provide immediate feedback based on the reading and discussion and/or writing for the day.

By supplementing these mentor texts and lessons into your English Language Arts block, your students can see many ways this skill can be presented, as well as analyze, discuss, and write about their thinking. Through these lessons, you are not only exposing your students to powerful picture books that highlight your standards, you are meeting your Writing and Speaking and Listening standards as well. These units are written for the 4th Grade Florida State Standards but also fit the Common Core Standards.

The standards covered:
LAFS.4.RL.1.1/RL4.1: Finding Evidence and Making Inferences
LAFS.4.RL.1.2/RL.4.2: Theme and Summarizing
LAFS.4.RL.1.3/RL.4.3: Literary Elements and Character Analysis
LAFS.4.RL.2.4/RL.4.4: Context Clues and Mythology Allusions
LAFS.4.RL.2.5/RL.4.5: Poetry, Drama, and Prose
LAFS.4.RL.2.6/RL.4.6: Comparing Points of View
LAFS.4.RL.3.7/RL.4.7: Visual and Oral Connections
LAFS.4.RL.3.9/RL.4.9: Compare and Contrast
_________________________________________________________________

This is...
- A way to incorporate multiple picture books into your curriculum
- A supplement to what you already do when teaching a standard
- Specific to one standard or skill only
- A way to get your students to see a skill from many different angles and through many different texts
- A way to assess (formative and summative) your students’ understanding and application of a standard
- A chance for students to think, question, discuss, and analyze different texts
- A combination of comprehension, application, discussion, and writing
- A flexible way to teach the standards.
- A digital product (no book delivery – sorry!)

This is not...
- A sole way to teach the skill
- The only thing you must do and your students will master the standard (continual exposure and practice is needed for everyone, always)
- A full comprehension/novel study guide per picture book
- Meant to be lengthy (each book and accompanying activity/question/exit ticket should take under 45 minute to read and complete)
