This PowerPoint presentation examines the eight years of Ronal Reagan's presidency. It begins with the election of 1980. Reagan's supper from the so called "new right" is covered establishing the backlash against the counterculture, against the feminist movement, and against supposed immorality in America. It also examines the ideology of the neo-conservative movement which advocated for a smaller, less expensive, and less socially responsible federal government. It then examines the impact of the 1981 assassination attempt on Reagan's efforts to secure his agenda which culminated with cuts to government spending, social welfare, and taxes. It then briefly talks about supply side "Reaganomics" and the impact that this agenda had on socio-economics in America. The presentation then delves into the Cold War and Reagan's gamble to antagonize and outspend the Soviet Union. Projects like the B-2 bomber, and most importantly the Strategic Defense Initiative are covered. Following a brief examination of the 1984 campaign against Walter Mondale, American involvement in Lebanon and Nicaragua are covered, the latter leading to a discussion of the Iran-Contra Affair. The presentation concludes with an examination of affairs transpiring under Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union ending with its downfall in 1991. This presentation is used in an Advanced Placement United States history class and is based in part on Chapter 40 of The American Pageant, 14th edition.
